Chatting for dummies
Blizzard really scored when designing their chat system. It is IRC style so anyone who uses IRC will find it really easy to get used to. Even if you are not familiar with the ways of IRC though, it is pretty easy to pick up once you know the commands.

Basic chatting
First let’s start with the basics. You can use /s to say although what is the point when you can just hit enter, type in your message and hit enter again to say it ;). This says it to your local area so good for random comments or chatting with someone else or a small group close by.

You can also use /y to yell but nobody uses because it is pointless and nobody likes it ;). It is also worth nothing that you can use /me for actions such as /me does a little dance will produce player_name does a little dance for everyone else.

Also if you type something like lol, your character will actually laugh both in the form of audio and you will see your character laughing which is pretty cool. There are lots of other emotes too.

Private chatting
Sometimes you will only want certain people to hear something or you will be far away from them (even the other side of the world) This is where tell (/t) and whisper (/w) come in. It works in the form of:

/w player_name message

So for instance if you had a friend called zog you might use /w zog Hi zog! Once you have typed in /w player_name, the chat window will automatically covert the pre-text bit to Tell player_name: before the cursor thing. You will see what I mean when you do it.

If you get a message such as this you can use /r message to reply so zog might see your message and want to send one back. He would just type /r Hi there! When you type /r it will fill in the player name automatically plus you can use the tab key to cycle through people if you are chatting to more than one.

Channel chatting
You may want to broadcast your message over a wider area. This is where channel chatting comes into play. You will notice that whenever you enter a city or leave one or move to a new region you change channels such as changed to 1. [Stormwind] General or something. Usually there are 3-4 channels.

If you say something into a channel in Stormwind, everyone in Stormwind can see it. Same if you say something in Westfall, everyone is Westfall can see it - you get the picture. To say something to a channel use /1 msg presuming 1 is the channel number.

Each channel you are in will have a number that you can use. You can use /chatexit # (# is the channel number) to leave a channel or /join to join a channel. Generally the default ones are mine though.

Conclusion
There are other commands, especially for when you are running a channel or guild chats. But this covers what you really need to know. For a full list see the official WoW website.

Also two final tips - remember that you cannot use the arrow keys to go back and correct a mistake in your chat line as she will just turn your character. Also, remember that if you are chatting to someone on a channel, don't forget to use /# because otherwise you will just say it to the people around you and the person you are actually taking to may not here it even it if appears in your chat window.
